Description

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is the ultimate comfort food—seasoned ground beef patties browned to perfection and baked in a creamy mushroom gravy. It’s a hearty, old-fashioned dinner that’s easy to prepare and perfect for feeding a hungry family. This cozy baked hamburger steak recipe is ideal for weeknights, potlucks, or Sunday suppers.

Ingredients

  • For the Hamburger Steaks:
  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • ¾ cup crushed saltine crackers (or breadcrumbs)
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • 1 tsp dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • All-purpose flour (for dusting)
  • For the Gravy:
  • 2 cans (10.5 oz each) cream of mushroom soup
  • ¾ cup milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, crushed crackers, milk, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.

  2. Shape & Brown: Form into oval patties and lightly dust each with flour. Heat a skillet over medium heat and brown patties on both sides—just until golden (not fully cooked).

  3. Assemble Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place browned patties in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

  4. Make Gravy: In a bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Pour evenly over the patties.

  5. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 5 minutes, until bubbling and fully cooked.

  6. Serve: Let rest for a few minutes, then serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

  • Add sliced mushrooms or onions for extra flavor.

  • Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top in the last few minutes for a cheesy twist.

  • Use cream of chicken soup for a lighter flavor.

  • Add thin potato slices under patties to make it a one-dish meal.

  • Don’t skip browning the patties—it adds rich flavor and texture.
